Liverpool’s top defensive target up
to a week ago, Belgium centre-back Toby Alderweireld has confirmed he
has joined Atletico Madrid from Ajax as replacement for new Manchester
City signing Martin Demichelis.
Alderweireld had attracted interest from a number of English clubs throughout the summer with Tottenham, Everton and Norwich as well as the Reds monitoring his situation at Ajax.
The Dutch club accepted a bid in the region of £5million from Spartak Moscow earlier this month but the Belgian international, 24, turned down the move to Russia.
Atletico
are able to offer Alderweireld Champions League football and his
signing will fill the void left by Martin Demichelis who was reunited with
Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City.
Demichelis, 32, will be a welcome addition to a City squad that has been ravaged by defensive injuries in the early weeks of the season.
City
will be without Vincent Kompany until the end of September, while Micah
Richards will only return to full training during the international
break.
However, Matija Nastasic returned to the team and partner Joleon Lescott at the heart of City's defence for the home win against Hull.
