5. The Prince Phillip Movement
If you’re a fan of the show An Idiot Abroad, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, you may remember one episode where they send their uncomfortable friend, Karl Pilkington to meet these people. The Prince Philip Movement is a cargo cult of the Yaohnanen tribe on the southern island of Tanna in Vanuatu. The exact time they formed this group is unknown, some speculate it was most likely in the 1950?s. The Yaohnanen strongly believe that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the consort to Queen Elizabeth II, is a divine being, the son of a mountain spirit.
According to ancient tales the son travelled overseas to a distant land, married a powerful lady and would in time return. Their beliefs were strengthened by the royal couple’s official visit to Vanuatu in 1974, when a few villagers had the opportunity to observe the prince from afar.
