Ekweremadu defiant amid threats to his freedom

Abuja -  The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has assured the international community and Nigerians steps were being taken to preserve the nation’s democracy.
He said such would protect the independence of the legislature.
Ekweremadu gave the assurance through his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja.
He is quoted as acknowledging the support from elder statesmen, governors, and lawmakers across party lines over the threat to his freedom.
“Nigerians have continued to express utter dismay and concern over the unfolding drama in which his life and liberty are being threatened by desperate politicians,” Anichukwu stated.
The Deputy Senate President assured that security agencies were taking necessary steps to beef up security around him.
He commended the security agencies for the professional manner they were handling the situation.
The Deputy Senate President also commended youths across the country for volunteering to provide additional security around him.
“No amount of intimidation or harassment will deter me from carrying out the constitutionally prescribed duties," he said.
He added, "On June 9, 2015, the People's Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress Senators willingly elected me in the full glare of the world to perform,” Ekweremadu said.
Police have recently taken the legislator for questioning amid unclear accusations following his recent election.
The opposition PDP had on Sunday accused the ruling APC of plotting the arrest of Ekweremadu after failing to force him to resign from his position.
APC has denied this.
