IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WITH A SEMICOLON TATTOO, THIS IS WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

If you are using the social media, chances are you have seen people with semicolon tattoos on their bodies. Is this a new trendy thing to do or is there more to it? What you probably are not aware of is that they actually do have some very strong symbolism attached to them.

Amy Bleuel is the girl that started Project Semicolon back in 2013 as a way to honor her father who had committed suicide. The semicolon tattoo symbol took on a representation for the struggles one faces with depression, addiction, and suicidal tendencies. It also represents moving forward from these struggles.

According to Project Semicolon’s website:
“A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”

This project got a very big following and support through the social media as well as musicians and became so much more than just one person honoring a parent. This message of hope and love has reached a big audience in many different countries thanks to this.

Writers, use the semicolon when they don’t want to end a sentence, but want to add more. In Project Semicolon, you are the writer who is choosing to not end, but add more to your life.

This is now a symbol of hope and determination and everyone with a semicolon has a story to tell. These stories are encouraged to be told and shared, while the ultimate goal is to open up a larger dialogue surrounding the issues of mental health.

Not only this, but the project unites people through their experiences and struggles that is not possible to be achieved otherwise.
