Reps probe Ebonyi assembly fire, rice importation


The House of Representatives on Thursday asked the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, to investigate the recent fire incident at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly complex.
The resolution followed a motion moved by a member from the state, Mr. Linus Okorie.
He had told the House that arsonists had set the legislative building on fire at a period of “heightened political tension and differences” between political personalities in the state.
In passing the resolution, the House specifically urged the state Governor, Mr. Martin Elechi, to ensure “sustainable peace in the state ahead of the 2015 general elections. ”
In another resolution, the‎ House ordered an investigation into the activities of companies importing rice into the country in breach of the Federal Government’s local production policy.
The House noted that the companies had not only exceeded their approved quota but also owed the government N28.3bn in duties.
Leading the debate on the issue, Mr. Simon Arabo from Kaduna State, mentioned Stallion Group, Popular Foods and Olam Nigeria Limited as some of the companies.
For example, he said‎ Stallion Group and Popular Foods, had an unpaid N15bn import duty standing against them.
He added that these companies, in spite of that went ahead to import additional 85,000 metric tonnes of the commodity.
