Smith Machine Squat
Using
the Smith machine to do a barbell squat might seem like a safer way to
exercise the same muscles but it really isn't. First of all, since the
machine does all the stabilizing for you, all of the smaller muscles and
your core don't get a work out like in a regular barbell squat.
Secondly, it's not really all that safe since the machine can lead you
to falsely believe you can lift more weight than you should, leading to
overuse injuries, plus keeping your back so perpendicular to the ground
compresses the vertebrae. It's actually better to do regular squats,
either with a barbell or without.
