Most car insurance claims involve another vehicle accident, cracked windshields or storm damage.
But
a one-at-fault driver whose incredible misfortune led to an expensive
claim after a tin of paint splattered inside his luxury Maserati vehicle
when he swerved to avoid a dog in South Australia.
Claims
Manager for RAA Insurance Hayley Cain said the driver had left the
paint on the backseat when the lid dislodged from the tin and flew
through the air.
'As
the tin flew around the car like a mini tornado, the leather interior
and windscreen were liberally splashed with a thick coat of white
paint,' Ms Cain said.
'Fortunately
the driver was fine, but given the extent of damage to the interior,
our insurance assessors declared it a write off and we settled the claim
for over $90,000.'
She
said the Maserati paint storm was definitely one of the company's more
unusual claims but the insurer has encountered some bizarre cases such
as rats chewing through wire of a Land Cruiser.
Other
insurance disasters included a Mercedes Benz being written off after a
coat hanger was lodged in the convertible roof mechanism, a parrot
eating a door trim and a dog trashing the interior.
'Truth
can be stranger than fiction with flying paint tins, hungry rodents or
destructive coat hangers but sometimes it's the apparently
straightforward claims that have experts smelling a rat,' she said.
'Fortunately most claims are genuine and our assessors are highly attuned to spot any signs of dishonestly.
Ms
Cain said the company assesses around 23,000 cars a year with the job
requiring a high level of skills to make sure claims are paid in a fair
and reasonable way.
She also added that the experience of assessors is also important when it comes to detecting potentially fraudulent behaviour.
'Our
assessors are trained to pick up suspicious signs like inconsistent
damage, timeframes that don't add up, unusual circumstances and
discrepancies around values or ownership,' she said.
