Rights group against police stop and search operations

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for the retraction of the stop and search operation police have initiated, saying it exposed citizens to violations by the uniformed forces.

“This decision is hasty, emotive and error prone and therefore should be overturned,” the civil rights group stated.
Its opposition comes a day after Nigeria police have said they will begin a special stop and search operation on highways and roads across the country as a way of combating acts of terror.
Police urged the general public to cooperate with police operatives by providing answers to questions that might be asked as well as allowing their vehicles to be searched.
HURIWA opposed the operation.
“We reject this directive for stop and search and warn that this Ill advised directive if allowed to stay will inevitably result in grave violations of the human rights of Nigerians,” the group stated.
“What then was the underlying objective of dismantling military checkpoints which in any case should have been fortified and well equipped to deter terrorists from staging seamless bombing campaigns rather than replacing them with these same poorly trained and poorly supervised and poorly disciplined Police operatives?”
The stop and search operations came in the wake of incessant terror attacks in some cities.
While the terror has over the years been prevalent in the three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, deadly attacks, blamed on the Islamic militant Boo Haram sect have hit Kaduna and Plateau States in recent days.
